The Navy Primary Standards Laboratory, a division of NAVAIR and the Fleet Readiness Center Southwest provides calibration services at a level second only to those of the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Our mission is to serve Navy metrology worldwide. NPSL is primarily responsible for:
The NPSL's technical areas include metrology engineering, electrical and mechanical metrology, and calibration.
Calibration is the process that establishes under specified conditions, the relationship between the values indicated on a measuring instrument and the true value of the standard used to make the measurement. Calibration ensures the instruments used by weapon system maintainers provide accurate measurements which in turn improves their ability to make correct maintenance decisions. This reduces the consumer/producer risks associated with the maintenance action; thereby ensuring a high state of readiness and reducing overall lifecycle costs.
NPSL calibrates and establishes standards for night vision radiance and focus. These standards have been used in the development of aviation night vision goggle technology and performance testing.
