NPSL is primarily responsible for:​

  • Servicing all Navy and Marine Corps calibration laboratories a​nd facilities, other government facilities, DOD contractors, and foreign government measurement laboratories.
  • Maintaining and disseminating the most accurate units of measurement in the Navy METCAL program.
  • Developing and maintaining precision measurement systems of the required accuracy to effectively provide measurement traceability from national standards.

The NPSL's technical areas include metrology engineeringelectrical and mechanical metrology, and calibration.

 
Metrology is the Art and Science of measurement, it is a science because it is​ based on fundamental princi​ple​s of physic​s and math, and it is an art because it requires elements of human judgment and skill gained through experience and training to convert the concept of a measurement to a practical application.
 

Calibration is the process that establishes under specified conditions, the relationship between the values indicated on a measuring instrument and the true value of the standard used to make the measurement. Calibration ensures the instruments used by weapon system maintainers provide accurate measurements which in turn improves their ability to make correct maintenance decisions. This reduces the consumer/producer risks associated with the maintenance action; thereby ensuring a high state of readiness and reducing overall lifecycle costs.​
